MEG & Centre fought back from a goal down to defeat a resilient Income Tax FC 2-1 after AGORC showed similar spirit to snatch a 2-2 draw against Bangalore Eagles in the BDFA Super Division League championship at the Bangalore Football Stadium here on Thursday.

Despite MEG’s early dominance, it was IT, who against the run of play, took the lead in the added minute of the first period (45+1 minute) through their defender and captain AD Kumar. And they almost managed to keep the Armymen at bay for the duration of the contest but two late long-range goals from Shubam Rana (81st) and Nitin (90th) changed the course of the match.

For all the possession that MEG had initially, it was IT who came close to opening the scoring, but forward Austin, under pressure from the MEG goalkeeper Sarath Narayanan M, blasted his shot over the bar.

MEG then threatened through Imnaakum, whose enticing cross from the right flank was headed off target by Shubham, free in the IT box. In the 36th minute, Imnaakum was again at the centre of things as he rattled the bar from a freekick.

IT, who were content sitting back, wasted another good opportunity in the 43rd minute. Shamanth D lobbed a delightful pass over the backline from the middle in the path of Sathish, who beat the offside trap to find himself with only the ‘keeper to beat, but he rushed his effort and saw it going over the crossbar.

In the added minute of the first period, IT punished MEG for needlessly giving away a freekick. Prem Kumar V stepped up and curled the ball into the box where AD Kumar outmuscled the defenders for a tap-in.

The Armymen came out all guns blazing after the break but met with an equally stubborn IT defence that kept them quiet for a large period. However in the last 81st minute, out of nowhere, Shubman came up with a left-footed scorcher from the edge of the box that landed in the top-left corner of the net.

With the scores level, MEG’s hunt for the winner came in the 90th minute after Nitin stunning long-range shot, from almost 40-45 yards out, entered inside the IT’s net, much to the disbelief of the players.
